SHSU - ATO Fraternity Scholarship Fund

Ronnie Caldwell, another of the Zeta Mu brotherhood has passed on to the Chapter Eternal. My dad passed away just a year ago and I am reminded of the issues to which attention requires. While flowers and plants enhance the service, they become another chore for the family. I gather from Kuch that Ronnie’s widow, Barbara, would be honored to have donations made to assist our newest Brothers with their college expenses. If you are inclined to make a donation in lieu of flowers, please mail your tax deductible contribution made out to SHSU-ATO Scholarship Fund (% Rick Hanna; PO Box 25; Huntsville, TX 77342) with a remark as to whom the memorial is being made. The University will send a letter to the family recognizing the gift. Last week I carried over $2,000 in memorials for Orin Covell and Steve Robinson

Fall 2010 Newsletter

This past weekend the Zeta Mu chapter hosted a Garage Sale to help raise money for the chapter. It was held in the lodge parking lot and we were able to raise $309.75, which is very respectable for a few hours worth of work. I would like to thank David “Shane” Rankin for putting this event together and all the work he put into this. Nominations and Elections were held this last meeting for Executive Board positions whom will begin their duties after returning from Winter Break.

How to make a difference

Orin Covell is the example to follow

by Denise Adams. FromThe Fort Bend Herald Thursday, November 11, 2010 Denise Adams is a former Fort Bend Herald staff writer who is now a high school journalism teacher at B.F. Terry High School. She remains a regular contributor to The Herald as a writer, photographer and weekly columnist.

A city can be characterized by bricks, buildings and roads. A community, on the other hand, is a reflection of the people who live there, those who create a sense of family.

Fort Bend County lost one of its most beloved pillars of the community with the passing of Orin Covell. Orin’s list of accomplishments are enviable — numerous booster clubs, MUD boards and civic boards.

At his wake, the line to greet Orin’s family stretched outside the funeral home and down the driveway. Many of us waited over an hour in line to hug Becky, and everyone from mayors to judges to business executives to college buddies came to pay their respects at both the wake and the funeral.

I remember Orin as the smiling guy in the starched white shirt and impeccable silver hair who’d start to tell me a story and, 30 minutes later, get to the end. But what a marvelous ride Orin took us on when he told his stories.

Zeta Mu Veterans

Today is Veterans Day! A post on Twitter today by ATO National () suggested we tweet the names of brothers who are Veterans of Foreign Wars or Active Duty Military. Texas Zeta Mu brother tweeted the names of a few from his era, I added a few that I knew and Rico, Spock & Charlie Adams contributed more to the list.

Give a big Ruh Rah to each of these brothers today to thank them for their service.

October 24, 2010 Battle of the Piney Woods

This past Saturday the Sam Houston Bearkats took on the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in what was a very exciting, down to the last minute game, before a record breaking crowd of over 24,000 fans at Reliant Stadium. The Bearkats played with heart and left everything out on the field, but in the end could not pull off the victory resulting in a 31-28 loss. The Zeta Mu ATO’s had a tailgate before the game as well, which was a great way for alumni to come and interact with some active members as well as catch up with old brothers.

RUSH Week and Installation

17

This Saturday concluded what was a very hectic and exciting RUSH week. The Zeta Mu chapter took 20 formal pledges, along with 3 informal pledges to make what is sure to be an exemplary Xi class. I would like to especially thank our RUSH chairman Jake McGee for all of the hard work he has dedicated to our chapter in the past four months to ensure we get an outstanding pledge class.
